“Scan the Scar”
In 2023, 102 000 girls aged 10 to 19 gave birth.
With these numbers continuing to impact the futures of young girls in South Africa, Amnesty International partnered with various NGOs to give these girls a voice. Many of these young girls aren’t physically or emotionally developed enough for childbirth. This often leads to life-threatening complications including emergency caesarean sections. We gave these girls a voice by creating multisensorial ads that allowed viewers to scan the scars of young mothers, taking them to Amnesty’s Spotify page, “scarred”, where they could hear each story, vividly placing them at the scene of each injustice.
Background.
We gave three stories sourced from the NGOs we worked with, to three South African poets and asked them to interpret them in their own poetic style. These poems were then performed to bespoke music composed specifically for each one.
